FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We have been in this business for longer then we can remember (visit the history page for more details). Through the years we have heard a lot of questions; probably every imaginable one you could think of and more. This page is just a small sample of those questions. Some of them are good, legitimate questions. Others are, well, lets just say that if your asking them it's good you're coming to us, and not trying to fix the problem yourself.

WHAT IS A TRANSMISSION ANYWAY AND DOES MY VEHICLE NEED IT?

The modern automatic transmission is by far the most complicated mechanical component in today's automobiles. The transmission contains technical systems, hydraulic systems, electronics and computer controls all working together in harmony... until there's a problem.

The transmission is a device that is connected to the back of the engine and sends power from the engine to the drive wheels. It is the transmission's job to make sure that power is delivered to the wheels while keeping the engine within certain RPMs (revolutions per minute). And yes, your vehicle needs one!

WHAT DOES A COMPUTER HAVE TO DO WITH MY TRANSMISSION?

On newer vehicles, shift points are controlled by a computer that directs electrical solenoids to shift oil flow to the appropriate component at the right instant. In other words, the shifting decisions are made electronically in your vehicle. If your "check engine light" comes on, it may be an indication that something is wrong with your transmission and should be tested with diagnostic equipment.

HOW LONG DOES A TRANSMISSION LAST?

There is no accurate answer to this question. The major factors in a transmission's life expectancy are maintenance, proper fluid level and how the vehicle is driven. Each situation is different.

WHAT CAUSES THOSE RED SPOTS ON MY GARAGE FLOOR?

If there is a persistent red oil leak it should be checked out, since there are numerous places it could be coming from. Sometimes it is a cooler line leaking, an axle seal, maybe a gasket, or more seriously, a front seal leaking. Gravity has a way of confusing us on where it could be coming from until we dry everything off and properly diagnose the leak.

IF I TELL YOU THE SYMPTOMS, YOU CAN DIAGNOSE IT OVER THE PHONE, RIGHT?

I won't even try! It is too hard to accurately describe all the symptoms and make sure I have all the information to correctly diagnose your vehicle. And it is hard to duplicate the exact "sound" your vehicle could be having. We always start with a test drive if possible.

WHAT DOES IT COST TO REBUILD A TRANSMISSION?

This depends on the year, make, model and type of transmission. Some just cost more for parts and labor to rebuild. Most major repairs are quoted as a complete finished job. They include all parts and the labor to perform the repair. It also includes unexpected parts and labor due to vehicle age. No surprises. We offer several financing options for our customers, since we know these repairs usually come when you least expect it.
